Parking is the whole story in Kingsbridge. Broadway is lined with cars under the elevated, the side streets climb steeply toward Riverdale Avenue, and alternate side rules move everybody twice a week. That means a lot of vehicles live at the curb in the weather, and it means that when a window gets broken, the owner usually has nowhere convenient to leave the car while it is dealt with. On the work itself, we would rather be slow and correct. Trim is removed properly and clipped back the way it came off, the pinch weld is cleaned before new urethane goes down, and nothing is handed back before the adhesive has cured to its rated strength. Anyone who has had a windshield done badly can describe the aftermath precisely: a rattle over every expansion joint, a whistle on the highway, or a damp patch that shows up in the footwell after the first heavy rain.
Broadway is the spine of Kingsbridge, running under the 1 train elevated with the shops and double-parked delivery vans that come with it, and the 231st Street and 238th Street stations anchor either end. Bailey Avenue and Kingsbridge Avenue run parallel below, West Kingsbridge Road cuts east toward Jerome Avenue, and Riverdale Avenue climbs west up a genuinely steep hill. Marble Hill sits at the northern edge with the Broadway Bridge crossing into Inwood and a Metro-North stop at the water. Van Cortlandt Park caps the top of the neighborhood, and the Major Deegan runs along the eastern flank, which is the quickest way south. Between the hills, the elevated and alternate side parking, curbside space here is fought over daily. Metered blocks along Broadway turn over, but the residential streets above them rarely open up before evening.

The hills are the local specialty. Steep grades mean cars take dips and driveway aprons at odd angles, and that body flex is what pushes an existing chip into a crack. Add the Deegan, where highway debris does its usual work, and the pothole patches along the avenue that reappear every spring after the freeze. Winter is hard on glass here for another reason: cars parked on an exposed hill get plastered with road salt spray, and salt sitting in a chip stops resin from bonding cleanly if you leave it long enough. Overnight breakage tends to be door glass on cars left on the commercial blocks, and back windows on hatchbacks parked on the slope, where anything that rolls downhill eventually finds the glass.
The simplest way down is the Major Deegan south, exiting toward the Cross Bronx and coming off at University Avenue or Jerome Avenue; from there Macombs Road is a couple of blocks and the lot is at 1589. Twelve to fifteen minutes is normal outside rush hour. If you would rather stay off the highway, Jerome Avenue runs the whole way south under the elevated and takes about the same time on a quiet morning. Yes, curbside work is normal for us. The catch is space: the tech needs room at the side of the vehicle, so a legal spot with a clear door swing works and a car wedged between two others does not. If you can move it to a wider block or a driveway for the appointment, that helps. Alternate side timing is worth checking before you book.
Longer than a door glass, usually. Rear glass carries the defroster grid and often the antenna, so it has to be fitted and reconnected properly, and tempered fragments spread through the whole cargo area. Between the install and clearing the shards out of the trim, carpet and spare wheel well, plan on a good part of an afternoon rather than an hour.
