Macombs Road is our street, so Morris Heights is not somewhere we drive out to; it is where the shop sits. People come down Featherbed Lane or over from University Avenue, turn into the lot, and hand over the keys without hunting for a spot first. Walk-ins run from six in the morning until half past seven at night, every day of the week, which is why a windshield that cracked on the way home Saturday night gets handled before Sunday is over.
What we would rather you notice is the finish. Old urethane gets cut back and the pinch weld cleaned properly, fresh moldings and clips go on instead of the ones we just pulled off, and the glass is set so the trim line runs straight down both A-pillars. Then it cures. If you have driven away from a glass job before and heard a whistle at fifty, or found water on the passenger carpet after the first hard rain, that is exactly the part we slow down for.
Morris Heights is built on a hill, and the hill shapes everything. Undercliff and Sedgwick Avenues run along the bottom near the Harlem River, University Avenue rides the ridge above them, and the cross streets in between are steep enough that you feel them in the brakes. The Cross Bronx is the main culprit up here. It runs in a trench just south of us, six lanes of truck traffic, and the grit that comes off that roadway lands on windshields all the way up the slope.
